Hello world example works (tried with TL2012's xdvi-xaw replaced by a 
symlink to TL2016's xdvi-xaw) I don't know anything about the innards of
xdvi and which libraries it uses and whether symlinking it in this way
to something away from PATH is ok. (I recall that some years ago
it started using some t1lib which avoided pk fonts, that's all)
