Very strange. 

Do you think this is reproducible in a virtual machine running
your vrsion of freebsd?

Another thing that comes to my mind is that you add printf statements
throught the code to find the place where it happens. I would do that ;-)

Not the slightest idea, but the (verified) is probably not the case.
