I have a script you might want to use, send me a person message if you
are interested. The approach is to install as less as possible
TeX-related pckages from Debian/Ubuntu and have the latest TL in /usr/local.

The most problems I encounter are packages with font dependencies which
clash with (usually more recent) fonts shipped by TL. As a result from
that I try to get packages to drop hard dependencies on font packages,
something which slowly gets better. If someone is interested in current
font package issues, send me a personal message too.
