Thank you Phil.  It's probably a better approach than using symlinks
because

  1. there is no need to remove stuff from older versions

  2. there are many text files in TeX Live which can be compressed
     efficiently

  3. symlinks are confusing if the target directory is not displayed
     in directory listings.

It makes sense to compress all but the latest release of TeX Live but
I fear that Ulrike already removed the fonts from older releases.
