Thank you all ery much for your contributons. The current state of play 
is at http://latex.silmaril.ie/formattinginformation/fontuse.html so all 
comments and criticisms are welcomed. Bear in mind this is aimed at the 
first-time user, who is possibly not a very savvy computer user.
