[texhax] I'm lost. Please help!

I have a copy of Dr. Lamport's book and found on page 92 a reference to the
classes.dtx file. I have downloaded the Cygwin distribution of tetex and the
source code and can't find this file anywhere.

Here's what I'm trying to do.

I'm working with the Distributed Proofreaders of Project Gutenberg
(http://gutenberg.net) to reproduce an early 20th century collection of
mathematics articles. It's set up in LaTeX as a book with chapters. I would
like to substitute the word "Article" for "Chapter" in the chapter headings
and in the page headings. I have determined that I need to override the
appropriate command (somewhere) and I can make this change.

One less important tweak: The document runs the articles together. What I
mean is that when one article finishes, the next article starts maybe an
inch lower on the same page. If I can't duplicate this behavior in a
straightforward manner, I don't think that failing to do so would subvert
the authors' intentions.

I'm sorry to barge in here like this. I appreciate any assistance you can
provide.

Thank you very much.
