As regards your images, it's hard to make a firm
recommendation without knowing more about what sort
of images you are trying to create; MetaPost

can do absolutely everyting, but it may be overkill.  Very
few packages can export LaTeX directly, but almost all can
export EPS, which you can then import.  See /The LaTeX
