It is quite unclear from your message whether you are using IEEEtran.cls;
do mention that when you post. If you are indeed using that, then this
question is answered in its documentation, available for download from
CTAN/macros/latex/contrib/IEEEtran/IEEEtran_HOWTO.pdf, or from the IEEE
web-site.
