[texhax] subscripts in text mode

There is a package 
amsmath
available from the American Mathematical Society
(but also from CTAN, I believe, and it may be there for you already)
that allows you to type
$\text{XYZ}_{\text{ABCD}}$ and have both XYZ and ABCD in standard Roman
font, and with the subscript the right size.
I find it so useful that 
\usepackage{amsmath}
is at the head of every file I produce.
