Odd number mean that you allow hyphenation, even that hyphenation point
is suppressed. Higher number takes precedence over lower (patterns "compete"
with each other). The "." mean beginning or end of word.
Check appendix H of your TeXbook.

One possible solution is adding the composed words you want specify the
hyphenation explicitly into your current \patterns list as
.a8f8t8e8r7h8y8p8e8r7p8o8l8a8r8i8s8a8t8i8o8n.
.a8i8r7f8l8o8w.
...
given that there is not higher number in your patterns than 6.
