Just curious if anybody of you knows about the current state of Omega

Omega itself is still being worked on, as you note.

There is an omega-system.sourceforge.net now, set up fairly recently,
but unfortunately I don't think it has ever become active, in terms of
source being uploaded, etc. And the home page there redirects to
http://omega.cse.unsw.edu.au, so that's no help. (The home page for
Omega has always been quite unstable, sadly.)

One related project is aleph (formerly eOmega), which adds e-tex to
Omega, fixes some nagging minor bugs that impact practical use, etc.
That project is led by Giuseppe Bilotta. Again, I don't know of any
public web site for it.

We do include aleph and Omega in TeX Live, so you can find last year's
sources on those CD's. If you want to see the current development
sources, let me know.

There were several papers at TUG 2003 about aleph and omega. See
http://tug.org/TUGboat/Contents/contents24-1.html (multilingual document
processing). You can find contact addresses for the various people in
those papers.

and where there might be an active mailing list dedicated to it.

I do not know of any active mailing list :(.

In general, common/public infrastructure has always been sadly lacking
with Omega ...

Best,
karl
