    This leaves my main tex distribution intact (so that when I upgrade
    it I don't need to go in and fiddle, nor run any separate texconfig
    things, etc.)

It's also possible to do this with multiple texmf trees.  I don't know
if miktex supports this, but web2c/tetex/texlive definitely do.  That is
the focus of the documentation I revised/wrote for the 2003 TL release.
