And Emacs allows me to write nonsensical words and sentences (or even 
to write run-on sentences without punctuation).

Should not the students have sufficient intelligence to get the 
structures right? (And yes, I do believe that spelling checkers and 
various "features" of certain word processors *have* hurt students' 
ability to write well.)
