Here is what I use, to replace the \tableofcontents command:
\newcommand\mytableofcontents{
\chapter*{\vskip-34pt\hrule\vskip10\p@
\Large\bfseries Contents}
\@starttoc{toc}}
You can change this to suit your needs.
