not all symbols exists in a bold version.

Try:

\usepackage{bm}

\bm{\beta}

\bm will simulate bold if needed.

BTW: \mathbf does not work on symbols anyway, only uppercase greek letters 
(which is why the bm package is recommended)

I don't quite follow, are you looking for a way to simply have a few 
matrices and an equation number?
