I hit upon this a while back, and there was a brief discussion on it on  
usenet:comp.text.tex.

A gentleman named, ``guido'' came up w/ some code for it, w/ was then  
adapted by ``Zarko'' (whose name has accents not shown here) for Memoir  
and w/ may or may not still work:
