[texhax] memoir + frontmatter + section numbering

hi there !

i have a problem, that the section numbering does not take place as i 
want it to:

using the memoir package, setting

    \setsecnumdepth{subsection} % give subsections numbers
    \setcounter{tocdepth}{2} % in toc, index until and including subsections


*if* i use \frontmatter and \mainmatter
    the subsections do not get numbered in the toc and appear on the 
same "level" as sections (but without numbers..)

*else* (i.e. *not* using \frontmatter and \mainmatter)
    things work as they are supposed to (i.e. subsections get numbers 
and appeard numbered and on the proper level in the toc


anybody got an idea what the problem could be ?
