[texhax] How to typeset a superscript * in a formula

This seems like something I should be able to find, but I've looked
through Math Into LaTeX and didn't see it.

Inside a formula, I'd like to have a superscript *.  When I just put

A^*  

the spacing is wrong (as if * were a binary operator)

I tried 

A^{\text{*}} but this also didn't work
