Isn't the space inserted by the verbatim environment what's causing
this?

I'd argue that it's bad presentation / writing to go straight from a
head to a display element w/o any intervening text (and no, I don't
like stacked heads either --- they're especially thorny when splitting
a text based on heads (say for an html product) causing one to wind up
w/ a page w/ only a lone head on it.

So instead so something like:

	\subsection {byz-data.dat}

The byz-data.dat is acted upon by the code shown below, with results as
one would expect from an understanding of the requirements as explained
in the previous subsection.

	\begin{verbatim}

I don't believe that non-sensical stuff should be catered to.
