As Konstantin suggested, $^*A$ might do.  If the spacing doesn't satisfy
you, then you could simply try something like $^*A\!$

or try the tensor package (of which I am now the maintainer):

\usepackage{tensor}

$\tensor[^*]{A}{}$ should guarantee both horizontal and vertical symmetry
with $A^*$
