[texhax] abbreviating journal (etc.) names w/ strings

BibTeX does not know how to abbreviate given strings (how could it?). 
So, you could have a, say, abbrstr.bib containing lines like
@string{abb = "Arch. of Biophys. and Biochem."}
and a fullrstr.bib with the full versions
@string{abb = "Archives of Biophysics and Biochemistry"}
then in your main bib file you should use, e.g.
  journal = abb,
At this point all you need to do is choos which "string".bib to load 
along with your "main".bib ... the same can, of course, be done for 
months, conference titles etc.
