I used LyX before. When I run into (for me) uncorrectable problems, I exported 
the LyX-document I was working on into LaTeX, and started using Kile where I 
worked with the LaTeX-commands directly, which gave me more control over the 
whole process. Since then, I only use (plain)-LaTeX instead of LyX.
Look for 'The Not So Short Introduction into LaTeX' for starting help into 
LaTeX. (www.ctan.org/tex-archive/info/lshort/english/lshort.pdf)

There is a LyX mailing list which helped me a lot during my LyX days:
