well not really, both is wrong.

simply using {\textrm dx} will make the 'd' in upright text font which is 
not right either. But it is expected that \dx should be using in math mode 
where the math fonts should be used. In that case

\newcommand\dx{\mathrm{dx}}

would have been a beter choice.

\mbox is wrong in any case, since it cannot determine the correct fontsize 
in supscripts.
