This seems to be the ISO specification for math typesetting, as mentioned 
in the Kopka and Daley book on LaTeX. So much so, I have 

  \newcommand{\diff}{\mathrm{d}}

in my personal sty file and write

   \int f(x)\,\diff x

in my work.
