The weight of the symbol produced by \dot{C} is somewhat on the faint side
I should like to make it bolder when it appears in places like this ...

\begin{table}
\begin{center}
\caption{\label{formation}Standard enthalpies of formation at 298 K
in kcal mol$^{-1}$.}
\begin{tabular}{lrrc} \hline
Species                               & $\Delta H_{\mathrm{rxn}}$ &
\multicolumn{2}{c}{$\Delta H_f$}\\ \hline
$\mathrm{CH_3CH_2COOH}$               & $ -3.90$                 &
$-107.60$ & $-108.6$ \\
$\mathrm{CH_3CH_2COOCH_3}$          & $  0.06$                 &
$-103.36$ &    ---   \\
$\mathrm{CH_3CH_2CO\dot{O}}$          & $  0.23$                 & $
-49.53$ &    --- \\
$\mathrm{\dot{C}H_2COOCH_2CH_3}$  & $ -3.62$                 & $
-59.26$ &    ---   \\
$\mathrm{CH_3CH_2\dot{C}H_2}$         &
$+23.91$                &                           \\ \hline
\end{tabular}
\end{center}
\end{table}

Is there an easy hack please?

Using ....
\documentclass[12pt,cites,graphicx]{article}
\usepackage[top=2cm,bottom=2cm,left=2.5cm,right=2.5cm]{geometry}
\usepackage{amssymb,amsmath,epsfig}
\usepackage{overcite}%{cite} % Elides numbers in references
\usepackage{indentfirst}
