[texhax] Problem with \ss in BibTeX

I have been told by a kindly soul why my BibTeX entry

>   author = "Herbert Vo{\ss}",

displays ss rather than \ss: it is because of the font I use.

When \ss printed in regular caps or small caps (as they are by default with
the style files I use), then it automatically becomes ss, according to
German grammar...
