Via private mailing, a helpful friend points out that it's looking for
the name of the file containing the font, either with or without the
".afm".  Stupidly, I was just trying "cmr" without the "10" or "7" and
also things like "Palatino", thinking that this is the "name" of the
font.  ("Helvetica" works, as it happens, which just makes things more
confusing.)

So Oleg's answer might have been:

  This is how you can get a font table:

    $ tex testfont

  And then give it the name of the font file you're interested in.
  Which you can find by looking for .afm files.
