 From what I understand here, your problem seems to be with your
Windows installation.

But here it seems you have a problem with your Mac installation. I
this is the case, I would advise you to subscribe to the TeX on Mac
OS X mailing list:

http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/main.shtml#Mailinglist

The MacTeX installer

http://www.tug.org/mactex/

should take care of that for you. It installs fonts in

/usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf-dist/fonts/

But fonts need map files that are installed elsewhere. If you want to
post your problem to the TeX on Mac mailing list (or in this very
list), please provide a minimal example of what *doesn't* work; like
for example, if you want Palatino and this doesn't work:

\documentclass{minimal}
\usepackage{mathpazo}
\begin{document}
Hello! $a + b = c$
\end{document}

Best,

Axel
