There are lots of things you can do, like reading one of the manuals
(grfguide.pdf for example).

Anyway, here's a selection of suggestions:

1. Instead of  dvi2pdf  try  dvi2ps + ps2pdf.

2. Set up a printer to create a postscript file and then from visio (I
assume you can) create a ps of your figure directly.

3. If, instead, you can create all you figures in, say, jpg (or even pdf -
e.g. with pdfCreator) then you can use pdflatex to generate the pdf
directly.
