It actually does.  Of course, glyphs are rendered differently if you
activate pdftex's microtypographic extensions.

I assume that you are using LaTeX.  So please take an arbitrary
document and compile it again.  Count the number of hyphenations and
overfull hboxes.

Then insert the line

  \usepackage{microtype}

and try again.

There will be less hyphenations and less overful hboxes but fonts will
be rendered differently.  Try the program pdffonts.  If you don't have
it, try File->Document Properties->Fonts in Adobe Reader.
