It seems all I needed to do was enclose the author's name in the
BibTeX database in braces.  The result was that BibTeX, which had
previously been writing single escape sequences into the bbl file for
certain unicode characters (e.g. "\320" for "Ю"), instead started
writing either (correct) pairs of escape sequences, or unicode
directly into the bbl.
