I am not sure if you really want to use something other than Computer
Modern, but if you do, Stephen Hartke's survey at
  http://ctan.org/tex-archive/info/Free_Math_Font_Survey/survey.html
is the best reference I know of.

Many millions of pages have been printed using Computer Modern without
any hue and cry from "press people", so I am a bit skeptical.
