[texhax] Paper size issues with RevTeX in combination with pdfTeX...

Hi,

I know paper-size questions are somewhat scorned, but I'm having
difficulty with this issue (after a number of hours of investigation).
I've searched both the texhax and pdfTeX-specific mailing lists for
this, as well as Google's cache in general, but to no avail. My setup
is based upon teTeX 2.0.2c-8 on Debian 3.1, but I suspect the
situation is similar in newer TeX distributions as well.

RevTeX4 allows one to specifically define the papersize as an option
to the class:

  \documentclass[letterpaper]{revtex4}

This works fine for me when compiling with the LaTeX -> dvips ->
ps2pdf route. However, it does not work for me with pdfTeX. Instead,
that compilation route seems to instead extract page size from the
options in '/etc/texmf/pdftex/pdftex.cfg' (similar to
'/usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/generic/config/pdftexconfig.tex' in a
newer texlive distribution in Debian 4.0), which is not editable by
non-root users, and thus a non-ideal solution for correcting this in
general.

I'm well aware that the standard solution would be to include the
'geometry' package and then specify the size directly in the LaTeX
source. Unfortunately, 'geometry' greatly munges RevTeX's layout, and
thus is not a solution that would still allow for APS journal
submission.

I greatly appreciate any guidance.

Thanks kindly,
Daniel
