[texhax] maintaining a database map for latex

Hey,

I want to replace links in a book with "QuickLinks", e.g.
http://debian.org would be rendered as
http://mybooksite/quicklinks/123 or similar. Can LaTeX help me with
this?

Can I specify a command like \link{} in such a way that LaTeX
takes #1, appends it to a map from contents to unique ID, returns
the unique ID so that it gets printed into the document, and later
allows me to access the map so that I can use it for the CGI on the
website?

Thanks,
