Thanks Uwe. Between Google search and "The Latex Companion Book" Ch. 3
I figured it out. It turns out I don't need the manyfoot package.
Google Search pointed me at: www.latex-project.org/guides/tlc2-ch3.pdf
In Sec. 3.2.1 the authors write
LaTEX does not allow you to use a \footnote inside another \footnote
command, as is common in some disciplines. You can, however, use the
\footnotemark command inside the first footnote and then put the text of the
footnote’s footnote as the argument of a \footnotetext command.
then they given an example of text with a footnote where the footnote
has a footnote
Some\footnote{A sample\footnotemark{}
footnote.}\footnotetext{A subfootnote.}
text and some more text.
Sorry to bother everybody. Hopefully this will be of use to others.
Thanks
George
