Thanks for that pointer!  That is indeed an excellent summary of what I was
considering, with useful links for more info.

For the moment, I've decided to go with LaTeX on XeTeX ... xelatex.  The
ability to use system fonts and the fontspec package is of paramount
importance for this project.  The textpos package is also essential, and
seems to do what I need.
