[texhax] anti-widow package

Hi all,

I have just finished Paul Isambert’s article about “strategies against widows“ in the latest TUGboat. I really like the ideas Paul presents and wondered whether it would be possible to turn his code into a very usefull LaTeX package. Because many people surely at least would want to test whether their document could look nicer with those strategies, but are afraid of writing/copying that much low level TeX hacks.

Any suggestions/comments regarding this idea? As Paul writes in the last paragraph of his article, the \everypar and \output routine are ”complex objects“ in LaTeX – is it possible at all to implement the anti-widow strategies?

I envision a package the user can load and adjust to his needs (choose one of the presented strategies, adjust parameters and so on) and so doesn’t have to rewrite all the code. Furthermore, it could contain makros to enable the author to manually adjust some hard cases.

Paul, would that be ok for you? I would try to package your code nicely, of course considering any wishes if you have such.

cheers
Arno
