The Tikz calc library is your friend here---the following should achieve
what you want to achieve:
% in preamble,
\usepackage{tikz}
\usetikzlibrary{calc}
% in your tikzpicture
\draw (a.est) -- ($(b.west) + (0,1)$);
You can do all manner of relative tweaking if you wrap the calculation
with ($ ... $)
