Well, actually, if Heiko didn't think of it, that might be because it's 
not such a good solution. So my question was rather directed at Heiko.
And I wouldn't call anybody a fool just because he/she doesn't think of 
\pdfescapestring. It's not like it's used very often. One may wonder, 
though, why it's not used in cooltooltips, and that's where I start 
thinking that might not be the better solution.

No, the primitive is disabled in LuaTeX, along with other primitives, 
probably because it can be mimicked with Lua. I can't see any good 
reason why the LuaTeX team chose to remove those primitives (even if 
they're mimickable), but, well, they did.
