[texhax] no axes with pgfplots possible?

An excellent question. Add this to your axis environment's parameter
list:  "axis lines=none".
You can try this for example:

\begin{tikzpicture}
  \begin{axis}[width=200mm,height=200mm,axis lines=none,line
width=1pt,colormap/redyellow]
    \addplot3[mesh]{exp(0-0.2*x^2-y^2)};
  \end{axis}
\end{tikzpicture}
