[texhax] [pdftex] image XObjects in pdfTeX or XeTeX PDF output?

It's been a while since I last posted on this topic, but a new wrinkle has
come up. I'm thinking specifically of XeLaTeX and xdvipdfmx.

I understand that if I use \includegraphics{...} to include a PDF, then
xdvipdfmx will automatically make that PDF into an image XObject, and
subsequent instances of that image will be treated as references to the
XObject.

I also understand that if I reference an EPS in \includegraphics, XeTeX will
use Ghostscript, if installed, to convert that EPS to a PDF before
inclusion, right?

Now, once converted, will that PDF (that was once an EPS) also be treated as
an image XObject, with only a single copy and potentially multiple
references in the PDF output? Will the conversion only happen once per EPS?

I'm trying to get some timings on running a large (approx. 35,000 page)
document that uses a handfull of EPSes over and over again, and to see if I
can improve the throughput.

Thank you.
