 1. Not sure. The OP may have profited from naming the purpose,
    but the answer to the actual question may be interesting 
    in its own right.

 2. Earlier I had criticized that Pierre MacKay's posting did not
    answer the actual question explicitly. In his defense I have now 
    told how his approach can be used to answer the actual question 
    explicitly, as an alternative to my earlier proposal (\f at size). 
    I.e., how to get the font size by TeX primitives rather than 
    from LaTeX constructs. Just in case somebody likes to know that, 
    irrespectivey of the OP's intention. -- Also for a general 
    subject on the list: LaTeX vs. Plain TeX.
