If this helps out with the package selection, this is what I am
currently using in the preamble:
\documentclass[11pt,a4paper]{article}
\usepackage{microtype}
\newcommand{\head}[1]{\textnormal{\textbf{#1}}}
\usepackage{fancyhdr}
\lhead{David Crosswell}
\chead{}
\rhead{\today}
\lfoot{}
\cfoot{\thepage}
\rfoot{}
\renewcommand{\footrulewidth}{0.4pt}
\pagestyle{fancy}
\pagenumbering{Roman}
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\usepackage{hyperref}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage{amsfonts}
\usepackage{amssymb}
\usepackage[table]{xcolor}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage{palatino}
\usepackage[left=2.5cm,right=2.5cm,top=2cm,bottom=2cm]{geometry}
\begin{document}
