    TeX is in ASCII already.  The files could be '.txt' but are normally
    labeled '.tex'.

watch out here -- unless the basic language
of the files is english, it could be using
another encoding.  utf-8 is becomeing more
and more popular, for good reason.  (i have
no idea what word will do with utf-8.)
