[texhax] Hyphenation of "2,5-dimethylfuran" and its ilk

The ordinary command \hyphenation{} in a LaTeX document works well but only for letters.
Extdash.sty covers those cases where the text contains a hyphen naturally as in “Twisletown-MacSwiddelpipes”
But how can globally hyphenate chemical names which can contain both digits (these can also be primed) & hyphens ?
eg 5-methyl-2(3H)-furanone, 4,4'-oxybis[benzenamine, etc
