I looked through the rest of this thread to see what problems arose
with MiKTeX installation and encountered the following gem:

  given the open source nature of the software it lacks product
  support

In fact, you would find both MiKTeX and TeXLive have excellent
community support. In contrast, the "support desk" for WinEdt, for
which you are paying, doesn't seem able to support you; you're
coming for community support for commercial software. I guess this
is what happens if you work at the Fisher College of Business.
