Which would be fine if they were all pixel images of a known ppi/resolution.

They're not, they're arbitrary .pdfs of ads --- I need to determine the physical / print size and evaluate it.

pdftex and xetex are the only tools which I've found for reliably doing this in a reasonable fashion. Scripting InDesign and Adobe Illustrator is even less fun (and in the case of AI a bit error prone 'cause of how it parses arbitrary .pdfs), using ImageMagick or PhotoShop requires that one rasterize each .pdf to a pixel image which takes a lot of time.
