Not needed with eps images...?

In the dvi output you don't see the ligatures...  To see them, you need the
dvips -> ps2pdf process first, so losing the forward and reverse search input
<-> output,

that you have (as far as I know) either with

            TeX
 file.tex <-----> file.dvi

or
           XeTeX
 file.tex <-----> file.pdf
