It's not really clear what your question is but I wouldn't modify dvips.def
(well, I would if I was me, I wouldn't if I was you:-) just put a
`mycolors.tex` in the local directory alongside your colordef.tex that has
\input color
\input colordef
then your document can use
\input mycolors
instead of
\input color
