I couldn't reproduce the problem either.  I tried before and after
updating TeX Live.  Everything works like a charm.

However, Jerry's mail contains

Ulrike, could you try Herbert's file with MiKTeX?  Just to confirm
that MiKTeX provides up-to-date TeX Live packages.
